Known for its vibrant history, golden beaches and misty mountains, it’s no wonder the small Asian country has been dubbed the pearl of the Indian Ocean.
With so many cultures living in and around Sri Lanka, there are cultural sites aplenty and a series of festivities held throughout the year. That’s enough to capture anyone’s spiritual side!
So, when is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
It’s important to note that Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons throughout the year. The south-western monsoon brings rain between May and September to the south-western part of the country and the north-eastern monsoon hits coastal regions between October and January. Plan your trip around these months to avoid washed out beach days.
In Sri Lanka every full moon is celebrated with a public vacation known as Poya. The most important full moon occurs in May when Poya marks Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and Pariniwana or passing away. Poya is celebrated with illuminated bamboo and hung pictures depicting the life of Buddha.
October – April
This period is said to be the best time to travel to Sri Lanka due to its cooler weather. However, care must be taken when booking beach resorts and accommodation in the north-eastern region. Monsoon season hits that part of the island between October and January so travelers should expect some rain.
The Kandy Esaka Oerahera is held in Kandy over ten days in late July to early August. The festival consists of a magical procession of drummers, dancers, whip-crackers, acrobats and elephants.
