Small Group Tour Itinerary

2018

DAY 1: COLOMBO
Arrive in Colombo, transfer to your hotel, and meet your fellow travelers and Tour Leader (or local guide). Most flights arrive late into Colombo so your tour briefing may take place over breakfast.

DAY 2: COLOMBO CITY TOUR
Explore Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital and discover some of the city's main sites on a walking tour including the Grand Oriental Hotel, Fort district, the bustling Pettah market, kovils (Tamil Hindu temples) and the Gangaramaya Temple.

Hotel: Ramada Colombo (or similar)

DAY 3: COLOMBO TO ANURADHAPURA
Drive to Anuradhapura stopping en route in Negombo to visit the famous fish market. On the journey to Anuradhapura, you might spot locals performing seasonal 'toddy tapping', a process that produces a popular local alcoholic beverage made from palm trees.

DAY 4: MIHINTALE
Visit the ancient complex of Mihintale, the birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhism. In the afternoon, discover some of Anuradhapura's main sites including a Bodhi tree that is claimed to be grown from the cutting of the tree in India, under which Buddha gained enlightenment. See the Thuparama
Dagoba (pagoda), perhaps the oldest Buddhist structure in the world. In the evening, experience the fantastic atmosphere created by the many visiting pilgrims who pray under the huge dome of Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba.

DAY 5: ANURADHAPURA TO SIGIRIYA
Depart Anuradhpura and drive to Sigiriya, stopping en route at a rural village for a bullock cart ride to gain an insight into the fascinating life of local farmers. Enjoy a simple lunch using fresh local ingredients. Explore the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa before continuing to Sigiriya.

DAY 6: SIGIRIYA ROCK
Spend the morning exploring impressive Sigiriya Rock which is steeped in myth and legend. Depending on your level of fitness, you may wish to climb the few thousand steps to the rock summit and be rewarded with magnificent views of the surrounding jungle and countryside. Enjoy free time in the afternoon or go on an optional tour to the deserted forest monastery of Ritigala.

DAY 7: SIGIRIYA TO KANDY
Travel to Dambulla, home to the cave temples that are filled with some of Sri Lanka's finest collections of Buddhist art. The five hilltop caves hold dozens of Buddha images and vast colorful frescoes. Afterwards, visit a tropical spice garden and learn about the plants that are used medicinally and in cooking. Continue the drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka's second largest city, situated on a plateau and surrounded by forested mountains.

DAY 8: KANDY
Visit the ornate Temple of the Tooth which houses Sri Lanka's most revered relic, a tooth of Buddha. Pilgrims from all over the world flock to the temple which is regarded as one of the holiest in Buddhism. Enjoy a local breakfast with your guide before embarking on a city tour. Go on a lakeside drive, visit a colorful central market area, learn about Sri Lanka's lucrative gem industry, and stroll through the beautiful Peradeniya Botanical Gardens before enjoying a farewell group dinner.

DAY 9: KANDY TO COLOMBO
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before commencing your drive back to Colombo. Along the way, stop at a tea plantation to learn about the tea production process, sample some tea, and of course buy some Ceylon tea if you wish.
