Small Group Tour Itinerary

2018

Day 1: Chiang Rai (Thailand)
On arrival in Chiang Rai, transfer to your hotel and meet your fellow travelers and Tour Leader (or local guide).

Day 2: Chiang Rai to Pakbeng (Laos)
Drive to the Laos border to board your private boat for the cruise to Pakbeng town. Arrive in Pakbeng by late afternoon in time for a walk through the local market.

Hotel: Phetsokxai (or similar)

Day 3: Pakbeng to Kamu Lodge
Continue your journey to Kamu Lodge, an eco-adventure designed to give you an insight into one of Laos’ ethnic minorities – the Kamu. Choose to participate in traditional Kamu activities including rice planting and harvesting, gold panning, fishing, or take a gentle hike to the nearby waterfalls. In the evening, enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal in an open-air pavilion overlooking the rice paddies.

Day 4: Kamu Lodge to Luang Prabang
Spend the morning doing as much or as little as you like at Kamu Lodge before continuing your cruise to Luang Prabang. Stop at Pak Ou Caves where local people continually add to a repository of Buddha effigies. In the early evening, participate in a cultural cooking experience themed around bamboo, an extremely versatile plant used in weaving, and which is also delicious to eat.

Day 5: Luang Prabang
Enjoy steaming-hot noodle soup for breakfast at a local noodle house. Visit Wat Xieng Thong temple, one of the most beautiful in Laos. Explore the National Museum and visit serene Wat Mai temple. Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty as you participate in rice farming activities on the outskirts of town. In the evening, join in a game of petanque followed by sunset drinks overlooking the Mekong River.

Day 6: Kuang Si Falls
Rise early to see brightly-robed Buddhist monks collecting alms. Explore a lively morning market before traveling to Kuang Si Falls, where you can swim in the turquoise pools and visit a nearby bear sanctuary.

Day 7: Luang Prabang to Plain of Jars
Embark on a full day road journey to the mysterious Plain of Jars. Head into town for dinner and gain a glimpse into the history of Phonsavan, one of the most heavily bombed places on earth.

Day 8: Plain of Jars
The Plain of Jars is one of Asia’s most unusual sites and the jars are estimated to be over 2,000-years-old. Visit jar sites 1, 2 and 3, which are the most accessible sites cleared of landmines. Stop at the Ban Napia spoon village which is known for turning bombs into spoons. In the afternoon, visit MAG Center to learn about the devastating effects inflicted on the Lao population by American military forces during the ‘Secret War’ on Laos.

Day 9: Plain of Jars to Vang Vieng
Drive approximately six hours through stunning scenery to Vang Vieng. Explore Tham Chang caves, one of the deepest in Vang Vieng, before returning to your resort.

Day 10: Vang Vieng
Enjoy a leisurely morning exploring Vang Vieng at your own pace. In the afternoon, travel upstream for some light kayaking on the Nam Song River, returning as the sun sets over this peaceful area.

Day 11: Vang Vieng to Vientiane
Continue your overland journey to the capital, Vientiane. Stop at ‘Kilometer 52’, a village with a large ethnic H’mong population and an excellent market. In Vientiane, visit Wat Sisaket, the city’s oldest original temple before being welcomed into a local home for a traditional ‘baci’ ceremony to wish you safe onward travels.

Day 12: Vientiane
Travel towards the Thai/Lao Friendship Bridge to intriguing ‘Buddha Park’ filled with statues inspired by Buddhist and Hindu epics, whose creator was rumoured to have been an eccentric local artist. Visit the Lao Disabled Women’s Development Center and COPE Center to learn about the inspiring work done by both organizations to help local people living with disabilities. Explore Laos’ most important temple Pha That Luang before visiting Patuxai Monument, reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Celebrate a memorable vacation in Laos with a farewell dinner.

Day 13: Vientiane to Pakse
Fly to Pakse, considered to be the capital of Southern Laos and your base for exploring this beautiful and undeveloped region. Enjoy some free time before meeting your new group of fellow travelers at a tour briefing.

Day 14: Bolaven Plateau
Discover a few of the impressive waterfalls on the fertile Bolaven Plateau - Laos’ premier coffee-growing region. During colonial times the Bolaven Plateau was populated by French settlers who were attracted to the cooler climate and fertile soils which created ideal coffee-growing conditions. Today, Lao coffee beans fetch some of the highest prices in the world. Visit a small-scale Fair Trade organic coffee farm to sample a freshly brewed Arabica and Robusta coffee. At Tad Lo Lodge, you may get a glimpse of a small herd of elephants bathing in the stream next to your lodge.

Day 15: Bolaven Plateau to Khone Island
From the Bolaven Plateau continue your journey to Khone Island in the far south of Laos, a trip that includes a relaxing boat ride. This remote part of Laos is situated close to the Cambodian border and is known for its expansive waterways, powerful waterfalls and languid tropical atmosphere.

Day 16: 4,000 Islands
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before driving to Ban Hang Done village to embark on a boat trip, in search of the famous and elusive Irrawaddy freshwater dolphin. See Li Phi Falls before enjoying a walk through the forest and local villages to your hotel. Visit the remains of the sole railway built by the French during their time in Laos, and the bridge, also built by the French, which connects Done Khone with Done Det Island. Enjoy free time in the afternoon, and explore the islands at your own pace. Hire a bike or simply enjoy a relaxing stroll.

Day 17: Wat Phou & Done Daeng Island
Travel to Khonephapheng Falls, the largest waterfalls in Southeast Asia in terms of water volume. Cross the Mekong River to La Folie Lodge and enjoy free time at the lodge. In the late afternoon, travel to Champasak to explore Wat Phou temple, a World Heritage listed site. Explore the pre-Angkorian ruins – one of the finest examples of Khmer temple architecture outside Cambodia.

Day 18: Done Daeng Island
Set out on a bike ride around Done Daeng Island, which is dotted with shoreline villages, rice fields, and swaying coconut palms. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to further explore the island by bicycle or on foot. Alternatively, sip a cocktail by the hotel’s gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the Mekong. This evening, enjoy a delicious group dinner at the hotel’s restaurant to celebrate the end of a memorable vacation in Southern Laos.
