Discover the unique natural attractions, fascinating history and contradictions of Japan, where your experiences span from futuristic bullet train rides to explorations of mountains, castles and art trails. Visit the mischievous snow monkeys soaking in the natural hot spring pools of Yudanaka and Matsumoto's magnificent original samurai castle. Delve deeper in the mountains traverse the Japanese Alps via a series of trains, cable cars, trolley buses, ropeways, tunnels and hiking routes. You'll also visit the world-renowned Benesse House on the island of Naoshima, where you'll find works by some of the world's finest modern artists at the exhibitions and galleries dotted throughout the island.

Small Group Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Tokyo
On arrival in Tokyo, transfer to your hotel. Meet your fellow travelers and Tour Leader (or local guide), and savor your first taste of Japan’s delicious cuisine.

Day 2: Tokyo City Tour
On a walking tour of Japan’s capital city, visit Yanesen, home to one of the most important Shinto shrines in Tokyo, Nezu-jinja. Walk through the maze-like alleyways of Yanaka and participate in a ‘shodo’ class – a traditional style of calligraphy art.

Day 3: Shunka-en
Travel to Shunka-en, the bonsai museum of Kunio Kobayashi to see the famous 1000-year-old bonsai pine tree. Visit Ueno Park, Tokyo’s most significant cultural center with museums, temples, and several of Japan's top schools. Stroll through Ameyoko-cho, a street market that began as a black market during post-war Tokyo. Visit Japan’s oldest and largest museum, Tokyo National Museum.

Day 4: Tokyo to Matsumoto
Enjoy the morning at leisure before taking the train to Matsumoto, a picturesque castle town nestled in the Japanese Alps.

Day 5: Matsumoto
Visit Matsumoto’s must-see attractions including Japan’s largest wasabi grower, Matsumoto City Museum of Art filled with Yayoi Kusama’s work, and Matsumoto castle.

Day 6: Matsumoto to Yudanaka
Travel to Nagano by train and visit Zenko-ji temple, a 7th century national treasure. Continue to Obuse and visit Hokusai Museum. In Yudanaka, see the delightful snow monkeys frolicking in the natural springs. Spend a special evening at a ryokan, enjoy a traditional kaiseki dinner, soak in the onsite onsen, and sleep on a futon bed in a tatami-floored room.

Day 7: Yudanaka to Toyama
Explore the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, one of Japan's most famous mountain crossings. When spring arrives, the Alpine Route is literally ‘carved through’ the snow, with an 18 meter high snow wall flanking the path. Autumn boasts some of the most spectacular displays of leaves changing color. Enjoy free time in Toyama.

Day 8: Toyama to Kyoto
Continue your train journey to Kyoto, the spiritual and cultural capital of Japan and enjoy a free day exploring the city. Whether you’re a fan of Japanese gardens, traditional architecture, temples, shrines, hiking, antique shops, cycling, or a combination of these, your Tour Leader (or local guide) can help design a bespoke itinerary.

Day 9: Kyoto
Discover the striking Fushimi Inari Shrine and walk along the path of vermillion colored tori gates which stretch for kilometers. Visit Nishiki Market, known to locals as ‘Kyoto’s pantry’, arguably the best traditional food market in the city. Enjoy lunch in a traditional Machiya, a wooden townhouse developed in Kyoto that once housed craftsmen, artisans and merchants.

Day 10: Kyoto to Takamatsu
Travel to Takamatsu, situated on the island of Shikoku, and take part in an interactive Udon noodle-making class. Visit Ritsurin-koen Park, one of the best landscape gardens in the country. There’s an onsite Kikugetsu-tei tea pavilion that offers a tasting of macha (green tea) while you admire the beautiful surrounding scenery.

Day 11: Naoshima Island
Take a ferry to Naoshima Island, set among the 3,000 islands that pepper the Seto Island Sea and known for its sandy beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and most importantly, the modern art scene. See artwork by Yayoi Kusama and visit the Chi Chu Museum, home to a permanent collection of Monet paintings. Fans of architecture will enjoy the museum building as much as the art within it.

Day 12: Takamatsu to Osaka
Travel to Osaka and discover the city on foot during a two hour walking tour. Visit Osaka castle, the Observatory and Nakazaki shopping street.

Enjoy a free day at leisure. Your Tour Leader (or local guide) can help you put together a self-exploration itinerary tailored to your interests. Enjoy a special dining experience at a farewell dinner.
