DAY 1: PARO TO THIMPU
Arrive in Paro, and transfer to your hotel in Thimpu. Meet your fellow travelers and Tour Leader (or local guide). Get your bearings on a walking tour and in the evening, savor your first taste of Bhutan's cuisine at a welcome dinner.

Hotel: Namgay Heritage Hotel (or similar)

DAY 2: THIMPU
Explore some of Thimpu's cultural highlights including the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, National Arts School, Folk Heritage Museum and National Textile Museum. In the afternoon, explore Tashi Chhoe dzong, perched next to the Wang Chu River and one of Bhutan's architectural gems.

DAY 3: THIMPU TO PUNAKHA
Travel on the scenic east-west National Highway crossing Dochu La, the first of several Himalayan passes on your journey through Bhutan. The scenery on these winding roads is superb with rhododendron forests, terraced fields, ancient temples and rushing mountain streams. Descend into the Punakha Valley and take a village walk to the Divine Madman's Temple. Stop for lunch before continuing to Punakha.

DAY 4: PUNAKHA
Visit the spectacular 17th century Punakha dzong. Walk to Bhutan's largest suspension bridge, taking in beautiful valley views along the way. In the afternoon, there's an opportunity to visit the revered ancient monastery at Wangdue Phodrang, depending on the progress of the rebuilding of the monastery after it was destroyed by fire in 2012.

DAY 5: PUNAKHA TO TRONGSA
Continue the ascent into the forests around Pele La where you may see your first yaks. Soak in views of Black Mountain on the journey to Trongsa, one of Bhutan's most attractive towns, and home to spectacular Trongsa dzong.

DAY 6: TRONGSA TO BUMTHANG
Visit Trongsa dzong, ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family. Explore this dramatically-perched fortress which cheeky Macaque monkeys also call home. Drive to Bumthang, crossing the Yotong La and passing the scenic Chhume valley with its numerous farming villages. Walk along the roadside, and pass through farmland and settlements with stunning views of pine forests, distant monasteries and streams.

DAY 7: JAMBAY LHAKANG
Explore the wonderful 7th century Jambay Lhakang temple and the many activities associated with its colorful annual festival which include temple dances and a wonderful country fair/market where locals don their best clothes and flock to the festival from all over the region. Visit Kurjey Lhakang, a nearby temple nestled in a rugged valley setting which holds the remains of Bhutan's first three kings.

DAY 8: PRAKAR
Visit Prakar, where their annual festival often coincides with the Jambay Lakhang drup. The Prakar festival is small and intimate where ornate masked dancers and beautifully-dressed local people mingle with visitors.

DAY 9: BUMTHANG TO PUNAKHA
Take a leisurely scenic drive back to Punakha arriving in the late afternoon in time for sunset.

DAY 10: PUNAKHA TO PARO
Continue the drive back to Paro arriving in the late afternoon and if time permits, visit the Paro Rinpung dzong independently.

DAY 11: TIGER'S NEST MONASTERY
Hike to Taktshang Goemba or 'Tiger's Nest' monastery. This monastery is perhaps Bhutan's most well-known attraction with its dramatic setting perched high up on a cliff face. The two hour climb is a challenging yet rewarding one.

DAY 12: THE CHELE LA
Ascend from the Paro Valley to the Chele La, Bhutan's highest road pass. In clear weather, there are fine views of both the Paro and Haa Valleys. The landscapes around the pass are magnificent especially with a dusting of snow or ice as is often the case at this time of year. On the descent to Paro, walk part of the way to enjoy beautiful views of the traditional farmhouses and fields in the area. Back in Paro, wander along the town's sole market street.
