Camels, Moustaches and singing under the stars – The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is on again

In India’s last living fort, against the backdrop of the ancient sandstone buildings and melting desert sunsets, “The Golden City” hosts one of the most colorful and entertaining desert festivals around. Held each year in February, the city comes alive with a moustache competition, turban tying and of course camels. The skies are lit by fireworks and the ancient folk songs drift in the breeze. Exotic and exciting, this is the Jaisalmer Desert Festival.

Mr. Moustache

It’s true that when it comes to moustaches, size isn’t everything. To be crowned best moustache, men display a surprising creativity with moustaches judged not only on length, but quality and a host of other criteria. Get your camera ready, this is one of the festival’s most popular events.

Music and Dancing

Some of the best performers in the region gather to perform everything from traditional folk music to gair and fire dancing. Nomadic gymnasts known as Kalabaz perform acrobatic feats and local puppeteers put on shows.

Camels

When you think of the desert you can’t help but think of camels, and the Jaisalmer festival doesn’t disappoint. Known for particularly agile camels, events include camel decoration, camel polo – oddly played between the local polo club and border security, camel dances and even camel tug-of-war.

A night under the stars

The last night of the festival takes place outside the fort amongst the Sam sand dunes, with singing and dancing into the night under a full moon, and a fireworks display you’re not likely to forget in a hurry.

The Jaisalmer Desert Festival will be held from the 20th to the 22nd of February in 2016. contact us for next year’s availability or to visit the incredible living fort at Jaisalmer throughout the year on one of our India Small Group Tours or Private Itineraries.
