Experience the beauty and awe of the Himalayas without making the extremely difficult trek to Mount Everest.

The Himalayas spread across Nepal, India, Bhutan, China and Pakistan. Whether you have the physical ability to trek through the ranges or you’d rather marvel from your hotel room, here are some other ways to experience the Himalayas throughout Asia.

Meet the locals in India's Itmenaan Himalayas

Stay in a cozy converted village home and embark on mostly flat day walks in India’s Itmenaan Himalayas. Marvel at mountain views from the stone cottage village which sits atop surrounding rice terraces. Trek through rhododendron forests or discover ancient temples at Jageshwar and experience local village life.

Visit the "Roof of the World"

Known as the “Roof of the World”, Tibet in the eastern part of the Himalayas is one of the highest regions in the world. The Tibetan plateau rises 4,900 meters high and is surrounded by the tallest mountain ranges in the world. Mount Everest shares its border with Tibet. Stay in Tibet’s capital city, Lhasa, which is home to world heritage sites.

Spend the night in a hilltop tea plantation

Spend the night in colonial-era tea plantations in in India at Darjeeling’s classic hill station. Kanchenjunga dominates the skyline as vibrant green-covered slopes surround the estate. Immerse yourself in the old Raj atmosphere and British colonial influences on the region.

Trek through the forest in Bhutan

HSikkim provides the best forest trekking in the Himalayas. The spectacular trek is considered easy to moderate and travels through the Kanchenjunga region of Sikkim. Spot yak graving in pastures as you follow trails through rhododendron forests on your way to Darjeeling hill station in India.

Experience the mountains from the water

Visit the mountain capital of Srinagar, surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks, from the Kashmir Houseboats on Nageen Lake. Discover the highlands, cruise to a floating vegetable market and visit beautiful Moghul gardens.

Marvel at mountain views in India

Head to Garhwal for lesser-known treks and explore the Himalayan foothills. Trek during April and May to marvel at the magnolias in full bloom or head there in October and November when mountain views are the clearest. Follow the valley of flowers, head to the Chandrashila summit or trek to Dodital Lake.

India’s Nanda Devi

India’s Nanda Devi region has been likened to Annapurna in Nepal. Follow ancient trails through alpine forests of bamboo and oak, visit traditional Hindu villages and marvel at mountain views. The walk is considered easy to moderate for beginners.
